Night Vision Camera Practical

I wanted to create a basic photograph that looked similar to the night vision cameras used within horror films so I took a photograph in my bedroom with my SLR. I placed a green coloured filter over the lens in the hope it would help towards the finished night vision product.
This is the image I started out with:

This image is very bright and very different to the night vision used in horror films, so I began to photoshop it. First, I made the image grainier, by going to Filter > Noise > 40.9% which made the image fuzzy.

I then duplicated the layer and created a layer mask over the top. This meant I could change the curves of the image, I did this so the output was 20%

I selected the area that I wanted the camera to focus on and deleted that area of the layer mask. This created a black rectangle around the image. I then blurred this by going to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and changing the pixels to 25.0. This gave the black outline a soft blur.

I then changed the opacity of the black frame as it looked too dark, so I adjusted it to 86% meaning it became slightly translucent.

Finally I added a couple of extras such as the [REC] symbol, a battery icon and a time stamp.

Here is the final product:
