Deconstruction in Non-Diegetic Sound in Trailers

Deconstruction in Non-Diegetic Sound in Trailers

World War Z

  • This is a zombie apocalypse film.
  • The non diegetic sound starts at 0:12, where the officer gets hit, and this is where the action in the trailer starts.
  • The sounds would have moments where it sounds like it is the repetitive gunshots of a machine gun, used by the army, due to the army being a significant presence in the film.
  • It fades and appears, as it will have moments of silence, which is filled with diegetic sound and then it will come back in, with a massive sound along with a scene change or a title.

Deliver Us From Evil

  • There are regular bass drops and noises, which hum throughout the piece, and this is usually accompanied along with either a scene cut or a production company.
  • To make the sound more eerie, there is a lot high pitched screeching sounds episodically. This is usually created with a violin, as it gives a screeching sound.
  • There are also simulations of wind, when there isn't too much instrumentation going on, and this is to show that there is something coming, and it builds up the suspense in the trailer.
  • A heartbeat is used just before the climax, to highlight the character's tension when something is going wrong.
