Deconstruction of Ouija
- Immediately, there is an establishing shot, to show where the film is set, and where all the supernatural occurences will happen.
- This is a conventional house for a supernatural film, which is a large, old and detached house even though it looks seemingly warm.
- The first character that dies is the first one to appear, along with the main female lead.
- This is conventional to have a death at the beginning of the trailer and film, which spurs on the rest of the supernatural occurances due to this death.
- Some background information on the ouija board is put in the title scenes.
- The background uses old photos, with supernatural ghosts in the background, to give the scene some suspense.
- Straight cut shots to either the next scene or a black fade are used, especially during the large bass booms in the non diegetic music.
- When the plot of the film is revealed, there is an establishing shot of all the main characters sitting around a table using a ouija board.
- The lighting is very dark away from the table with a lot of shadows, which represents the impending doom to come, and this also highlights the characters.
- The mise en scene is also very old, and this is conventional, as it is set in quite an old fashioned house, as these houses are the types that are more likely to get possessed.
- As the suspense reaches it's climax, there is a large amount of quick straight cuts to supernatural events, which do not even last a second long.
- The non diegetic sound also starts to get even more high pitched, with strings providing the higher pitches and bass drums providing the bass sounds.
- The trailer ends with a close up shot of the character getting possessed and saying the film's caption "it's just a game".
Conclusion
We could take the idea of having the whole group coming together to discuss the recent happenings, and having an establishing shot to show where they are, whilst having the dialogue running on top of the different straight scene cuts. Also, having several different phenomenons happening builds the suspense of the trailer, which adds to the build up to the ending.
