Deconstruction: Dragging Shots

Evil Dead

At the end of this trailer, there is a dragging scene as a victim is pulled down into a cellar. She runs up the stairs and trips over onto the floor. She is the pulled by her ankles (although you cannot see the thing pulling her) into the cellar and the door slams shut. This works well as you cannot see what the victim is being attacked by.
There is a loud scream and she it being pulled away as well as a deep, low tone drone that is parallel to what the audience can see on screen.

Paranormal Activity

Towards the edge of the scene there is a quick clip where the eldest child is pulled to her feet and then dragged backwards away from her sister. The audience does not see the entity pulled her which adds to the fear factor, as most people are more scared of the things that they cannot see.
As she falls there is a loud diegetic thud as she hits the floor as well as a high pitch scream as she is dragged away out of shot. This works well as it adds to the realism of the shot.

So in conclusion - the audience don't tend see the villain/entity that harms the victim or drags them away. Therefore we will try and create this effect using darkness and shadow in order to hide our victim from audience view.
