Film Poster Deconstruction

A film poster must display:

  • The genre: Key images and mise en scene
  • Title: typography and colour
  • Tag Line
  • Release Date
  • Narrative
  • Production Company
  • Website and Multimedia Links
  • MAIN CHARACTERS
What is the poster telling you about the film?

- INDEPENDENCE DAY

  • New York - power and dominance
  • Spaceship = never ending - empire state looks small and vulnerable
  • Tag line - made so people stop and read
  • Attracts specific audience - sci fi and alien lovers
  • No actors - unique selling point (big risk)
  • Dark colours - unknown
  • Warm colours - fire, destruction and apocalyptic
  • Typography - worn, robotic, powerful and capitals

- STAR WARS: EPISODE 1
  • Futuristic - spaceships, robots, aliens
  • Main character - light behind him - good character
  • Dalf Mole - villain, colours, eyes, lumping, sinister, evil, suspicious
  • Ensemble cast - many characters
  • Size reflects importance
  • Typography - links with other films

- NIGHTCRAWLER

  • Unclear genre - car and leather jacket (but nothing happening in poster)
  • Colour scheme: red and black = horror but blue and yellow = subversion
  • Character = side lighting - sinister
  • Hyper-real feel (animated) + green screen
  • Unrealistic
- THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

  • The love story = main focus - takes away from the scientific feel
  • Blue and white = calm and relaxed
  • Title = typography = old fashioned, sans serif
  • Formulas depict science side to the movie.
