Film Poster Research

Based on my Film Poster deconstruction, I have decided to take a closer look at posters that relate more to our genre of film. Therefore, I have chosen to look at: The Apparition, The Blair Witch Project, The Return and Quarantine. These films are all of the Supernatural Horror genre which means we can relate to and take ideas from these posters.

This poster portrays a very similar genre to ours - a supernatural horror film with a victim. The photoshop work that has taken place on this image is very complicated with high levels of knowledge in order to create the image. The main colours are black, grey and brown. There are very stereotypical colours within a horror poster as they are dark and dreary colours. The tag line is very obvious and clear on the poster. Unlike most - this image does not display the production company or social media links - these are two things that we plan to include within our poster.

This image is slightly different in comparison to the other posters. This is due to the layout of the poster, having the main character's face appear at the bottom as well having the scenery for the film appear along the top of the poster. The tag line is rather long and placed within the centre of the poster. This forces the audience to stop and read the tag line. The title is placed very near to the bottom of the poster, which is not the best placement as, because of the size, it may be missed by the viewer, therefore leading them to not know what the name of the film is. The colours are very similar to before - black, brown and grey.

Again, this poster does not display any of the characters featured within the film, however, it does give the audience a strong hint as to the genre as well as the type of horror film that it is. The colour scheme of black, brown, grey and blue work well as they are gritty cold colours - causing a spine chilling feel to the poster. The blank eye and hand print adds a sense of being trapped or perhaps turned to stone which again, adds the sense of eery-ness to the image. The typography from the title is simple yet creepy, the blurred 3D effect makes the audience look twice in order to read it clearly. From this image, I think we will take the colours as well as the fact the image does not feature any of the main characters.

I chose this poster on the idea that we have included quite a lot of found footage within our trailer which links very well with the film "Quarantine". The green and black colour scheme gives the idea that the film is mainly filmed in the dark with a night vision setting on the camera. One of the main characters is features on the poster which gives the audience a hint as to who the film is aimed at - teenagers/ young adults (15 - 25). The typography is very futuristic and robotic which related to the fact the entire film is found footage and amateur.

Based on this research we have decided to include the following features within the poster:
  • Social Media Links
  • The Production Company
  • Title
  • Tag Line
  • Main Characters / No Characters
